3/5
  • Site is completely, including all features
  • Site is full of ads, including pop-ups
  • Very simple website with simple design
  • Many private and public chatrooms available

StrangerMeetup is a place to meet friends and partners online. It’s a possible solution to the dilemma of struggling to meet people in real life. It’s worth checking out if you’re too busy, you lack transportation, or you’re just too shy to go out to public places. While your cyber friendships and relationships may progress to the point of meeting in person, all of the awkward small-talk can take place online.

The platform was founded in 2010 by two Swedes, Andreas, and Eva. They wanted a site where people could chat with others without disclosing their identities, stating that “there’s an amazing energy in that” and you can feel freer to express your true self to someone who doesn’t know you at all.

Essentially, this is an anonymous chat service where you can meet new friends, form new relationships, or even find love. A site that welcomes just about anyone to start chatting with random strangers may seem a bit sketchy. This review will help you determine if StrangerMeetup is a platform you’d like to visit, or if it’s one that you’d rather bypass.

Membership

Very little is known about the members on StrangerMeetup. Due to anonymity, it’s hard to get a reading on where people are from and even whether they’re male or female. What we did find from the site is that its members span over 200 countries.

Creating A Profile

Registration takes just a couple of minutes. Enter a username, your email address, and a password. From there, you’ll receive a verification email. Open up that message and click the verification click. You’ll be redirected to StrangerMeetup.com and a page that invites you to view your profile. However, when we clicked it, we got an error message saying that the page could not be found. Instead, we had to click the user icon at the top right-hand corner of the site.

This took us to our profile, which showed a generic smiley face profile picture, our country of origin, and our gender. You can post status updates on your profile page, similar to the way Facebook works. People can like or comment on your status. It’s not clear how other people can find your profile unless you go into a chat room and invite people to view your profile.

Likewise, you can view other people’s profiles, although the only way we found to do this is by chatting with a stranger and visiting their profile through the chat room. From there, we could add them as a friend or look at their contacts list to find other people to talk to. On your profile, you’ll see a list of recent chats and contacts, so you can keep track of who you’re talking to.

That said, registration is not required for you to start chatting on the site. If you go to the homepage and scroll down, you’ll see that there are conversation starter tips as well as highlights about what you can expect from StrangerMeetup.

Using the Site

While perusing the site, you can always click on the menu bar in red at the top. There is a user icon, a bell notification icon, a mail icon, and a search icon.

All of the features on StrangerMeetup are free. That said, your only real options are the chat rooms. The administrators claim that they keep the chat clean and free of bots. When you enter a public chat room, you will see a list of people who are in the chat. You won’t be able to see the conversation that was going on before you entered. Public chat rooms are open to all users whether they have an account or not. Public chat rooms require registration. You can exchange photos in the chat, but it has to be consensual. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about someone sending nudes or inappropriate content without your permission. You can also create your own chat room.

You may notice a “Blog” link on the taskbar. This takes you to the site’s lifestyle blog, which is full of articles to “improve your social life,” both in real life and on the Internet. Some examples of the blog articles on the site include “How to Improve Your English,” “How to Catch a Girl’s Attention,” and “How to Get a Picture From a Stranger.” It also looks like there are user-submitted blog posts in which members share what they like about the site as well as tips on how to maximize your experience.

There’s a search icon on the taskbar, but this just takes you to a Google custom search bar. There are no prompts or filters to customize your search, so it’s not that helpful. Finally, the site can send you email and app notifications when someone messages you.

Finding A Match

More people will find you on StrangerMeetup if you optimize your profile. This includes filling out the customizable fields in your user bio. It takes a minute to identify your gender and write a sentence or two in the “About” section. That’s as far as profile optimization goes. You can upload a photo if you’d like, but most people don’t.

You can use the chat rooms to find like-minded people. The rooms are categorized so you can find a space for friendships, dating, and casual conversations. There are also private face-to-face chat rooms if that’s what you’re looking for.

When we logged in, the site said that there were over 3,500 people online, but the three chat room options (Lobby, Friendship, Dating), were empty. So, we decided to click “Chat with a Stranger” and try our luck there. We were put into a private chat room with another stranger. Immediately, the other person posted explicit text, so we left. We tried again, just to see if that was a fluke, but it wasn’t. So, if you’re looking to just have a frisky chat with someone online, the private chat rooms might suffice. However, if you’re looking for meaningful connections, this isn’t the best place.

Accessibility

The website has a simple and straightforward design. While there’s nothing wrong with a minimalist look, StrangerMeetup just looks bland and unprofessional. The stark white background and basic black font blends in with the many ads on the website. This makes for difficult reading because you can’t tell at first glance what’s an advertisement and what’s part of StrangerMeetup. Speaking of ads, pop-up advertisements and banner ads disrupt the flow of the site’s features.

There is a StrangerMeetup chat app for iOS and Android that includes all of the features of the Web version except for photo sharing. The app is rated for ages 17+ and has 2.9 out of 5 stars on the Google Play Store and just 2.1 stars on the App Store. The primary complaints are that the app is glitchy and constantly crashes and that there are way too many ads on the site. The app has just 50,000 installs and was last updated in June 2015. If mobile compatibility were something that this company wanted to focus on, surely they would put more time and effort into working out the bugs.

The site is available in English, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, and more. There is only one way to get in touch with the team, and that’s by emailing info@strangermeetup.com.

Safety

Relatively speaking StrangerMeetup is not a secure site compared to other online dating platforms. The site claims that administrators and moderators are watching over the chat rooms, but the private chats can get raunchy.

There is a Terms and Conditions page, but it hasn’t been updated since early 2015. The Privacy Policy was last updated in 2018 and includes information about data that the site collects, as well as details about the cookies they use and that they employ third-party sites to provide some of the services. It also states that the site is not 100% secure and the administrators cannot guarantee absolute security for users.

There is also a page dedicated to success stories from the site’s services. The page shows quotes and testimonials from users who have found friends online and have felt free to be themselves through anonymity. Some people have even met dating partners on the site and have met up in real life.

Pricing

StrangerMeetup is 100% free to use. If you register on the site, you have access to all of the features. If you don’t sign up for an account, you won’t be able to engage in private one-on-one chats.

FAQs

Can I share photos?

The founders of StrangeMeetup wanted users’ words to speak for themselves. So many dating and social media sites let the pictures do the talking, but this can get in the way of really getting to know someone. Therefore, the founders wanted photos to be a secondary form of communication after words have been exchanged. That said, you can exchange photos if the recipient accepts your request. Unsolicited photos are not permitted.

Is StrangerMeetup safe?

Our time on the site felt safe but uncomfortable. The “Chat with a stranger” feature is a hotspot for creepy guys, but the public chat rooms are friendly enough. As long as you practice common sense and don’t give away personal details about yourself, you should be fine.

How do I add someone as a friend?

Go to their profile and click the blue button on the right-hand side that says “Add friend.”

How do I add a profile picture?

Go to your profile and click the default image. You’ll be able to upload a photo file from there.

Can I block other users?

No, but you can remove them from your contacts list. If you do that, they won’t be able to message you again.

How do I delete my account?

Go to your profile and click on “Settings” underneath your profile picture. From there, you should see another link that says “Delete account.” You’ll have to enter your password to verify the deletion.
