EliteSingles is an online dating service founded in Berlin, Germany in 2008, and rivals eHarmony in their detailed matching system and serious client base. Unlike eHarmony, EliteSingles caters specifically to college-educated singles. Founders and CEOs Jerônimo Federico Folgueira Sanchez and Michael Schrezenmeir wanted to give users more quality control over their online dating experience. The result was EliteSingles, with its comprehensive privacy settings and matchmaking algorithms.

Membership

EliteSingles is popular among college-educated adults, with 82% of members having at least a Bachelor’s degree. These individuals are typically looking for a serious relationship rather than a hook-up, so you’re bound to find a tamer member pool here as opposed to an app like Tinder.

There is an even 50/50 split between men and women, and over 90% of them are over the age of 30. In terms of gender, the women on the site are likely to fall into the 35-54 age group, while the majority of the men on the site are 25-34 years old.

EliteSingles sees 65,000 new members sign up each week, and the site is used in over 25 countries. Out of the 13 million members, 5 million of them come from the United States. The site is also popular in Canada, Germany, and the U.K.

The active weekly members total 900,000, while each month, 2,000 new couples are formed from the matchmaking site. EliteSingles gets 2 million visits per month from straight, gay, and lesbian singles.

The selective profile matching is intended to give singles a better chance of finding that special someone. Still, the process is more time-consuming than sites like OkCupid and Tinder, which thrive off of hook-up culture and casual dating. Expect to find a serious membership pool on EliteSingles, one that is committed to finding a long-term relationship.

Creating a Profile

Signing up for EliteSingles is easy and requires an email address and chosen password. After that, you will have to complete a personality survey, which can take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes. Fortunately, you can save your progress and come back to it if you can’t complete it in one go.

Your answers to the personality survey are crucial, as they will be used to rank your compatibility with other members. It gets pretty in-depth, asking you to identify with certain pictures and words. It also provides statements relating to your personality and asks you to rate yourself against them. For example, does the statement apply to you a lot, a little, or not at all? The statements address things like cleanliness, introversion/extraversion, values, popular opinions, and more.

The survey was developed by psychologists and is based on 29 distinct personality traits, including the “Big Five” personality dimension analysis, which covers Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Openness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism.

Once you finish the personality survey, you’ll be taken to your profile page. Here, you can find a list of potential matches, based on your questionnaire answers. Your profile will also include basic information such as your first name, age, city, and job title.

Members are encouraged to fill out as much profile information as they can, as it helps the site weed out any members who wouldn’t be a quality match for you. There are up to 200 questions to answer, so it can be a bit time-consuming.

Fill in a short bio about yourself and refine your match preferences based on things like location, finances, and more. You can also fill in open-ended sections related to your taste in music and TV shows, your favorite books and movies, and your likes and dislikes.

Don’t forget to upload some profile photos, as they’ll increase your chances of getting views, even though you need a paying account to view them.

Using the Site

Even as an unpaid member, it’s still kind of fun browsing the site and tailoring your profile page to fit your personality. Your profile page will feature a dashboard at the top of the screen with different function tabs. This includes things like messages, matches, visitors, and the “Have You Met?” feature. You can also scroll down on your profile page to see these different options.

The “Have You Met?” section features an individual’s profile with the question, have you met? It works sort of like Tinder since you can send them a wink to show your interest, or you can click the X to bypass their profile. The feature is meant to help you see potential matches that you might have missed.

If you have a free account, your options are going to be limited. You’ll be able to view other profiles, but without a paid membership, you can’t see photos. You can see their profile page, along with their basic information (first name, age, city, job title), and whatever info they filled in on their profile.

Their profile picture might have a little heart icon on this. The number in the heart represents how well you two match on a scale of 0 to 100. On their profile page, you’ll see icons for sending a message or a smile, as well as adding them to your favorites list. If you aren’t a paying member, you can’t send a message.

When it comes to the user dashboard, it’s pretty straightforward. You can click on your user icon to edit your profile, add photos, or answer more personality questions. If you click on your user icon and navigate to “My Account,” you can change your notification and matching settings and your details.

This is also where you can delete your account. If you do that, any match that you have messaged will be deleted from your contacts list, and your profile will be permanently deleted. If you sign up again in the future, you won’t be able to restore that profile, and you’ll have to start from square one.

All in all, the dashboard is clean and user-friendly and you should have no trouble navigating it. The Preferences menu (which shows up when you click on the user icon) is where you can narrow down your match searches based on all kinds of things. Choose the age and height you prefer, their smoking and drinking habits, desire for kids, ethnicity, religion, and more.

Another handy feature is the website blog, EliteSingles Magazine. It includes tips from dating gurus, psychologists, industry experts, and the EliteSingles team. To get to it, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on “About Us.” From there, you can click the “Magazine” tab at the top of the page.

Finding a Match

When you use EliteSingles, you’re not exactly finding a match because the site does the matchmaking for you. Since you’re not preoccupied with browsing dud profiles, you can instead focus on getting to know your matches. The site makes it easy to see what actions you can take when you visit someone’s profile, such as sending a wink or a question.

To bypass the awkwardness of that first conversation with a match, the site uses the “5 Questions” feature. These are icebreaker questions that initiate interaction and get you both chatting. However, it’s only available to paying members. Likewise, only people with paid subscriptions can like and comment on profile pictures.

Those with free membership can see a match’s Big 5 personality traits, their hobbies and interests, and their bio. There are options next to their profile picture for adding them to your favorites list, deleting them as a match, and sending them a smile.

The favorites list helps you remember the profiles that you want to visit again. Don’t worry, you can remove them later if you decide they’re not a good match. If you find that you’re not getting good matches, then double-check your preferences.

Accessibility

There is an EliteSingles app available on iOS and Android. It’s a small download file, so it’s easy and free to install. The app includes the same functions as the desktop version and the same contemporary, professional design.

That being said, apps are more prone to crashes and bugs, and the EliteSingles app is slightly less user-friendly than the desktop version, which gives you prompts and does a better job of guiding you along. While you can sign up on the app, the process is a bit different and not as in-depth. For the best experience, you should use the desktop version.

All in all, the site is intuitive with logical placement and layout for the menus and features. Scrolling to the bottom of the screen, you’ll see a Customer Care tab, which will bring you to the site’s Help Center. Here, you can find answers regarding subscriptions, cancellations, refunds, and more.

Safety

Overall, EliteSingles is a safe online dating site. All profiles go through a verification process with the Customer Care team, and messages are filtered to help weed out offensive comments and replies. The preliminary personality test is also meant to deter those who aren’t serious about finding a partner, and inactive or unresponsive users are periodically removed from the site. Given that users need to pay to see pictures and access more information, there are probably fewer fake accounts and creepy people using the site.

EliteSingles uses a Secure Fraud Detection System to keep ghost profiles at a minimum. It also uses ID Authentication, firewalls, and SSL Encryption for secure payment and communication. The site does store the personal information that you provided at registration but doesn’t share it with anyone.

Members can report a user and can get in touch with the team via phone, email, or contact form on the website. The company’s U.S. address is 3300 N. Ashton Blvd, Suite 240, Lehi, UT 84043. Their phone number is 800-778-7879 and their email address is support@elitesingles.com.

Pricing

EliteSingles’ free plan has limited features, although you can still send smiles, read a member’s profile, and get daily matches. You’ll also have access to your favorites list and a report on your Big 5 personality results.

The site will constantly prompt you to sign up for a paid subscription. You’ll have three plan choices. The Premium Light package lasts for 3 months and costs $24.95 per month. It grants you access to unlimited messaging as well as something that EliteSingles called “Intelligent Matchmaking.”

The Premium Classic plan is their most popular and costs $14.95 a month for 6 months. It gives you unlimited messaging and intelligent matchmaking along with the ability to see all profile photos and visitors to your page.

It’s worth noting that all plans are paid upfront in full. That means you’ll be charged $74.85 if you sign up for Premium Light, $89.70 for Premium Classic, and $155.40 for Premium Comfort. Payment is made by credit or debit card, or PayPal.

You can get away with a free account for a little while, but you’ll eventually need to sign up if you want to use this site to find love. Paid accounts are prioritized and will speed up your progress.

FAQs

How do I report a user?

Go to the person’s profile page and click on the X icon next to their profile picture. This will remove the person from your matches and block them. You can also do the same thing with your messages, clicking the X and hitting “Report this message.”

Why can’t I see who viewed my profile?

It’s a paid feature, so if you have a free account, then you won’t be able to see this information.

Can I see matches outside of my preferences?

To see a wider range of people, go to your preferences and edit them so they aren’t so narrow. You can’t do this with everything, but you can state that certain traits aren’t important to you, such as age and location.

Is EliteSingles just like eHarmony?

It’s similar, but EliteSingles is tailored to suit college-educated singles who are 30 or older. The site aims to match people based on their income and education level as well as personality.
