5/5
  • BDSM community and dating website
  • Website is completely free to use
  • Lots of fake profiles and no mobile app
  • Profiles need to be approved before they can send messages
  • More than 1,600,000 worldwide members

Collarspace claims to be ”the largest BDSM community on the planet.” This unconventional dating site is affiliated with another BDSM-centric dating site, Alt.com. Like that website, Collarspace is a no-judgment zone that also respects members’ boundaries and allows them a safe place to find like-minded partners. This is an online platform designed for those who want to indulge in BDSM and other sexual fantasies, whether they’re into guys, girls both, couples, and more. An important tenant of Collarspace is that it promotes ”safe, sane, and consensual” sex.

Membership

Collarspace has about 1,600,000 total members and 500,000 unique monthly visitors. Around 890,000 members come from the United States, while another 256,000 are in the United Kingdom. Canadians make up about 80,000 of the site’s membership base. Each day, there are around 15,000 active users on the platform.

In terms of gender, there is a 70/30 split between men and women. There isn’t much data on Collarspace’s age ranges, but there are people here ranging from their 20s to their 50s. Unlike more conventional dating sites that cater to monogamous, heterosexual couples, Collarspace caters to a wide range of sexualities and gender identities. It’s not unusual to find people on the site who are looking for a BDSM couple, a polyamorous group of people, or even an online-only romance. Moreover, this site is open to straight, gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals, as well as swinger couples and transgender men and women.

Creating A Profile

It’s free to register on Collarspace, and all you need to do is enter a username and password, along with your email address and zip code. Once you sign up, it takes a day or two for your account to be verified and approved.

You can choose to make your profile public or private, and it can be as sparse or as detailed as you want. The most basic information includes your orientation (such as dominant male), and what you’re seeking (submissive female, couples, etc.). You can also add your city, height, weight, age, ethnicity, and a short blurb about yourself. You can also specify certain skills you have that may fall outside the realm of BDSM. Skills might include accounting or gourmet cooking. You can also choose from a list of interests, such as music, sports, adventure, spiritual, intellect, lifestyle, and more.

You’ll want to take the time to describe yourself if you want to attract your preferred matches. However, lots of profile information is publicly viewable, so it’s sort of an unsafe situation.

Using the Site

Collarspace is free to use and you’ll be able to message anyone you like once your account is verified. There’s unlimited messaging as well as chatrooms to explore. These include private chats and public messaging boards that are overseen by a site moderator. Another feature involves live cam videos. You can watch these for free, or you can register with www.cams.com through Collarspace and chat with the actors. Collarspace works with several affiliates and third-party sites. You’ll notice if you click the “Toys” tab on the menu, it redirects you to www.extremerestraints.com, an e-commerce site for sex toys and accessories.

The search filters can be quite extensive so you can narrow down your results. You can search by gender identity (male, female, couple, transgender) and orientation (dominant, submissive, switch, slave). This terminology will make sense to those who are into dominant-submissive role-play. Other search filter options include location, sexuality, ethnicity, age range, height, weight. Most member profiles will describe what kind of partner the person is looking for, such as a dominant female or someone who switches between slave and master.

You may notice that you get “admirers” on the site. This means that other members have added you to their Favorites List. You can put someone on your list by going to their profile and clicking “Add to Favorites List.” Besides all of these features, the site has a resources tab that you can use to explore events in your area, as well as advice and standards within the BDSM lifestyle.

This platform has more of a community feel than conventional dating sites. There are message boards, events pages, and other resources where you can get tips and advice, meet up with like-minded people, and learn how to stay safe with partners. Be aware that you can’t filter out explicit content, and lots of profiles feature graphic photos that express their sexual kinks and role-playing style.

Finding A Match

A unique feature of Collarspace is that when you visit someone’s profile page, you can write personal notes about that member. Only you will see these notes, and you can use them to jot down things that stand out about them. You can also add that person to your Favorites List, or you can block them. There is also an option to report their photos, perhaps if they’re violent, inappropriate, offensive, or too graphic. Other options include sending them one of your photos, viewing their Journal (a part of their profile where they write more details about themselves and post status updates), or invite them to be friends, as you would on a site like Facebook.

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to find profiles that were created years ago and are still on the site, although they’ll be inactive. Something that can help you bypass the inactive accounts is to browse through the list of members who are currently online. You can also use the search filter to find people who were recently logged in. Needless to say, sorting through inactive or fake profiles can take some time, but for those who put in the effort, they can find a meaningful match. There are certainly people on this site who are looking to establish bonds (literally and figuratively!)

Accessibility

As for its design, the website looks like it was put together haphazardly. The entire website is a boring gray color that adds zero personality. Whereas other dating sites have an obvious branding strategy and color scheme, Collarspace is drab. There is no mobile app, which isn’t surprising considering the website looks like it hasn’t been updated in over a decade.

The design isn’t very intuitive either. The left-hand side of the website has a decent menu, but it’s a very small size and doesn’t exactly stand out. The menu has options for browsing members, viewing live videos, reading BDSM resources, and more. There is also a tab for events, which are public gatherings that range from BDSM conventions and workshops, pride parades and meetings, swinger parties, and more.

Collarspace, previously called CollarMe, is owned by Bayshore Software Technologies Inc. in California. Their address is 548 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94104.

Safety

At first glance, it appears that Collarspace is a pretty safe website, but there are some definite red flags. First of all, the simple sign-up process means that fake profiles abound. Yes, there is a verification process, but as long as you use a real email address, you will be approved.

Another security measure to consider is keeping your profile private since public profiles are accessible to the public, even to non-members. Simply visiting the site grants you free roam of the member profiles. Yet another safety concern is that from time to time, people find that their photos have been shared on Collarspace without their consent. In other words, someone created a fake profile using their information. This can be especially dangerous given that anyone can see a public profile. The site has a page specifically for those kinds of situations.

The “Resources” tab on the left-hand menu will allow you to explore tips on how to have consensual sexual experiences and stay safe. This is reassuring to see, especially since many of the profiles on this site as quite graphic and lewd. The resources tab also contains information about BDSM and standards of conduct, as well as how to be an ally to the LGBT+ community. This is a part of the site that everyone should read, as it provides insight into knowing your limits (in terms of BDSM), learning about different sexual identities, understanding the discrimination that some people face because of their orientation or identity, and how to help.

The website is full of graphic content, some of which might offend some people, particularly those who are new to BDSM. Members can report any pictures they find inappropriate, and they can also block users. You can contact the company by clicking the “Support” link at the bottom of the webpage. The Terms and Conditions list the site’s rules regarding fetishes and kinks.

Pricing

Collarspace is free to use, so once you sign up, you can access all that the site has to offer. While you may have to pay for the services and merchandise on the third-party sites, everything on Collarspace is available free of charge.
